Trace Elemental Partitioning on Clays Derived From Hydrothermal Muds of the El Tatio Geyser Field, Chile

چکیده
Recent experimental studies have demonstrated that clay minerals (e.g., kaolinite, illite, and montmorillonite) higher affinities for some trace elements under acidic versus alkaline conditions. This suggests clays might be important vectors in the transport of from sites chemical weathering on land to marine depositional environments. To determine if behave similarly nature, we collected water mud (consisting 38.5%–61.1% kaolinite samples boiling, low-pH, pools venting at El Tatio Geyser Field (ETGF) Chile. Based elemental abundances aqueous/solid phases, observed lower pH = 2.42 3.55) high concentration factors anionic P As) but low cationic Ca, Mn, Sr), while 4.87 5.84) display opposite trend. Acid-base leaching experiments further reveal increasing solution (to reflect downstream transport) led release As surfaces due increasingly negative surface charge, decreasing effects re-acidification) released Li, Co, Sr, Mo, Cd. Our study confirms previous findings demonstrate can assemble a diverse inventory during acid then liberate them back into aqueous phase as increases. Importantly, these observations provide mechanism account regional contamination rivers ETGF.

متن کاملHow Do Modern Extreme Hydrothermal Environments Inform the Identification of Martian Habitability? The Case of the El Tatio Geyser Field
Despite the success in knowledge gained by the Mars missions in the last two decades, the search for traces of life on Mars is still in progress. The reconstruction of (paleo-) environments on Mars have seen a dramatic increase, in particular with regard to the potentially habitable conditions, and it is now possible to recognize a significant role to subaerial hydrothermal processes. For this ...
متن کاملSilica deposits on Mars with features resembling hot spring biosignatures at El Tatio in Chile
The Mars rover Spirit encountered outcrops and regolith composed of opaline silica (amorphous SiO2·nH2O) in an ancient volcanic hydrothermal setting in Gusev crater. An origin via either fumarole-related acid-sulfate leaching or precipitation from hot spring fluids was suggested previously. However, the potential significance of the characteristic nodular and mm-scale digitate opaline silica st...

The plumbing of Old Faithful Geyser revealed by hydrothermal tremor
Old Faithful Geyser in Yellowstone National Park (USA) has attracted numerous scientific investigations for over two centuries in order to better understand its geological structure, the physics of its eruptions, and the controls of its intermittency. Using data acquired with a seismic array in 1992, we track the sources of hydrothermal tremor produced by boiling and cavitation inside the geyse...
